Women play crucial role, says Queen in calling for more representation at ministerial level

KUALA LUMPUR: More women should be given opportunities to serve at the ministerial level, says the Queen.

Raja Permaisuri Agong Tunku Hajah Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah (pic) said even with current statistics that show women comprise almost half of the world’s voter population, only 2% of women lawmakers made it to the ministerial level.

“When I was at a United Nations workshop, it was said that women represent 50% of voters worldwide and yet we only represent 2% at the ministerial level.

“Women play a crucial role in the country as peacemakers.

“The voice of women is a voice to be reckoned with,” Her Majesty said.

The Queen also said she gives full support for everything that empowers women and all matters pertaining to women.

“What’s important to me is to listen to the voice of the women who are fighting for their rights,” the Queen added.

Her Majesty was delivering an impromptu speech at the 60th National Womens’ Day celebration at Dewan Perdana Felda here Thursday (Aug 25).

Also present at the event were Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob; Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Rina Mohd Harun; and Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri.
