Scammer posing as DJ Dave to borrow money

KUALA LUMPUR: A scammer has reportedly been impersonating popular singer Datuk DJ Dave to borrow money from targeted victims.

According to the singer, the perpetrator has been using his WhatsApp profile picture and getting in touch with people on his contact list to ask for a loan since early Saturday (Dec 3) morning.

He added that the scammer also hacked his Telegram account and reached out to those on his contact list there as well.

“I received more than 100 phone calls from people saying they were almost duped by the scammer.

“I hope everyone will be careful,” he said when contacted on Sunday (Dec 4).

DJ Dave said he had heard about such impersonators and scams but never dreamed that he would fall victim himself.

“I was shocked that the photo used by the scammer was my (WhatsApp) profile photo. I have since changed it.

“My friends told me that the scammer asked for various sums from RM3,000 to RM8,000 and he (contacted) them in the wee hours of Saturday morning,” he said.

He has since lodged a police report at the Jalan Travers police station and hoped that no one would fall prey to the scammer.

“I stress that I am not involved. If anyone receives a WhatsApp message from the scammer, contact me or my manager directly.

“People can also check my real WhatsApp status, which warns them of the scam tactic,” he added.

The showbiz veteran also said he hoped the police would be able to trace those responsible and bring them to justice.
