Sarawak will not compromise on religious freedom, says assemblyman

KUCHING: Sarawak will never compromise on its right to religious freedom regardless of who the new Federal Government is, says a Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) backbencher.

Tupong assemblyman Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman (pic) said the state would not negotiate on issues that mattered most to Sarawakians.

“I believe our Premier (Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg) will do what’s best for Sarawak. Whoever becomes the prime minister or whichever party leads the Federal Government, GPS will keep fighting to protect our rights and ensure that racial harmony in Sarawak is preserved,” he said.

Speaking while debating the state budget in the Sarawak Legislative Assembly on Thursday (Nov 24), Fazruddin said that he hoped no one would stir up racial or religious sentiments for political mileage amidst the uncertainty over forming the new government.

“Don’t be irresponsible and act as if you don’t know your actions will lead to racial tensions.

“Nobody will emerge victorious. The losers will be Sarawak and its people,” he said.

He added that every state assemblyman, regardless of their religion, supported the development of mosques, churches and other houses of worship in their respective constituencies.

“Let us unite regardless of our political affiliation to preserve this situation,” he added.
