MMEA detains five Myanmarese crew members on local fishing boat

GEORGE TOWN: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) has detained a local fishing boat manned by a crew of five Myanmar nationals.

The five were found without any documents at 62 nautical miles west of Pulau Kendi near here on Wednesday (Dec 14).

Penang MMEA director Captain Maritim Abd Razak Mohamed said the fishing boat, which was using a trawler net to fish, was spotted by a MMEA patrol boat that was conducting Op Tanjung in the area.

“Following an inspection, it was found that the boat, based in Pantai Remis, Perak, was manned by five foreigners aged between 20 to 43. All were detained for further investigation because they did not have valid travel and personal documents,” he said in a statement here on Thursday (Dec 15).

Abd Razak said the boat with the five men and 150kg of fish were taken to the Limbongan Batu Maung Jetty for further investigation. – Bernama
