Floods: Sustainable development plans needed, says Wan Junaidi

PETALING JAYA: A reason for the recent floods that hit several states in Peninsular Malaysia is poor development planning, says Datuk Seri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar (pic).

“As we strive towards becoming a developed nation, it is about time for Malaysia to come up with comprehensive policies on sustainable development,” said Wan Junaidi.

The Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department said that taking care of the environment is not the sole responsibility of the government, adding that it needs the support of all parties – including industry players.

On support for flood victims, Wan Junaidi said that any support should come through official channels.

“Make your contributions through official, trustworthy channels to ensure that your donations will reach the intended recipient. Malaysians are famous for their generosity and are always willing to help those who are in need,” he said.

He added in his Christmas message on Saturday (Dec 25) that he hoped people would not fall prey to opportunists looking to take advantage of the situation.

A campaign known as the “Do Not Donate Here” campaign has gained traction recently on social media after many expressed their disagreement with the government collecting donations from the public to be channeled to flood victims.

The campaign, however, encourages donors to contribute directly to non-governmental organisations.
