Dr Wee urges Johor Port Authority to keep up positive growth

PETALING JAYA: The Johor Port Authority (JPA), having recorded an increase in performance, has been urged to keep it up as a gateway for the country in the south.

Transport Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong said LPJ has been called to improve performance at two ports under its management, namely Tanjung Pelepas Port and Pasir Gudang Port.

“The two ports are an important gateway for the country or the ‘Malaysia Southern Gateway’ which certainly brings many benefits to the Malaysian Family.

“Last year, the Tanjung Pelepas Port (PTP) managed to handle 11.2 million TEUs, which is an increase of 14% compared to 2020. I hope this year PTP is able to maintain this momentum.

“The same goes for Pasir Gudang Port, which is expected to continue to be a commodity hub, especially the largest palm oil storage facility in the world.

“I hope that JPA can break this record or at least maintain its excellent performance, even though ports around the world are facing challenges and side effects due to the Russia-Ukraine conflict,” said Dr Wee after launching the JPA Cares Malaysian Family programme in Pasir Gudang Monday (Aug 22).

The event saw the presentation of donated glasses to school students and helmets to JPA, PTP, schools and the Kampung Pasir Gudang village head, as part of JPA’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) efforts.

“Well done and congratulations JPA for implementing many programmes to support the government’s efforts in helping the people, especially those affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.

“The Transport Ministry greatly appreciates such efforts which go hand in hand with the government’s continuous efforts to help the less fortunate and the less able,” said the MCA president, in his speech.

Also present were LPJ chairman Rosnan Fathlal and general manager Kamaruzaman Munasir.
