The Shah Alam LRT line, which is also known as Light Rail Transit 3 (LRT3), is expected to start operations by March 2025, transport minister Anthony Loke said during a site visit at the Johan Setia Depot in Selangor yesterday. Progress for the construction of the new line is being carried out briskly, and has so far reached 86% completion – including other works such as the signalling system, he added.

In case you missed it, LRT3 was first announced in 2016 and originally had a total of 26 stations planned. However, it was later revised to only consist of 20 stops, which also includes two interchange stations (Bandar Utama and Glenmarie) that allow passengers to switch over to different train lines (MRT Kajang Line and LRT Kelana Jaya Line, respectively).

“We have 22 sets of three-coach trains currently being tested,” Loke said. “The entire project is expected to cost about RM16 billion, so we expect this project to be implemented well and I am confident that all parties will work together to ensure that this service starts operating on 1 March 2025.”

Further revealed by the transport minister is the capacity of LRT3, which is said to be capable of transporting 18,630 passengers per hour and direction. This is expected to benefit over two million residents in the Klang Valley, especially from Petaling Jaya to Klang.

Loke also assured that all 22 trains are new, comfortable, and equipped with environmentally-friendly technology. In fact, his visit to the depot and the LRT3 operation control centre yesterday also saw him participating in a trial run in one of the trains.
