Rescuers evacuate 275 flood victims from several areas in Johor

JOHOR BARU: A total of 276 flood victims from 63 families were rescued and placed at the temporary relief centres (PPS) after their houses were inundated with water.

Johor Civil Defence director Asst Comm (PA) Kamal Mokhtar said that as of 8am on Sunday (Nov 13), there were three districts affected in the state with six PPS in operation.

“The highest number of victims is at Kulai, with 194 people from 40 families, followed by Segamat with 57 victims from 18 families, and Kluang with 25 victims from five families.

“The PPS with the highest flood victims is at Dewan Serbaguna Kampung Baru Sengkang in Kulai with 139 people from 29 families,” he said in a statement here on Sunday.

The other PPS was at Dewan Raya Kampung Murni Jaya, Kulai; Dewan Utama Kampung Ithnin Maarof, Kluang; Balairaya Kampung Batu Badak, Balairaya Kampung Kuala Paya, and Dewan Komuniti Tasek in Segamat.

The water level at Sungai Sayong near Kampung Sungai Siam, Kulai, had also reached a dangerous level of 20.7m from the normal 19.0m, he added.

Meanwhile, Kulai Fire and Rescue Department operation commander Bakhtiar Selamat said the team received reports of flash floods at 8.14pm on Saturday (Nov 12).

“The water had risen to 1m deep, and we have managed to rescue 134 victims from Kampung Melayu Sengkang and move them to the community hall nearby.

“The victims include four babies and 26 children,” he said, adding that a total of 27 houses were inundated with water.

The department has also deployed two boats, one ambulance, and a five-ton truck.
