Johor polls: First-time candidate adapting to SOP on campaign trail

JOHOR BARU: The strict standard operating procedures (SOP) for the Johor election may be a challenge but a first-time candidate in the Johor Jaya state seat is taking it in her stride.

Barisan Nasional candidate Chan San San, who is from MCA said the present SOP introduced by the Election Commission has more leeway than the Melaka election, where candidates were not allowed to campaign physically.

“It is a world of difference if compared with the 14th General Election of course, but this is how campaigning is in the new normal and I am going with the flow.

“Despite being unable to hand out flyers or speak to voters much during my walkabouts, I make it up by reaching out to them via social media,” she said when met at Flat Tasek 64 in Bandar Seri Alam here on Tuesday (March 1).

Earlier, she had a walkabout in the Jalan Bakawali area in Taman Johor Jaya before making a stop at the Pasir Gudang City Council’s foundation programme at the flats where about 50 recipients received food baskets.

Chan, who has been actively helping the community for the past 12 years, said that she did not hand out any aid as the foundation had already distributed all the items by the time she came.

“I only dropped by to say hello to the recipients while on my way to the Seri Alam district polling station to meet some volunteers,” she said.
