Johor-based construction company wins tender for Gurney Wharf mega project

GEORGE TOWN: Local engineering construction company has been chosen as the main contractor for state mega project Gurney Wharf.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the company Teto Engineering Sdn Bhd has been chosen through an open tender after being evaluated thoroughly by state government officials.

“The state government has decided that the execution of this project will be conducted through an open tender to give opportunity to more qualified contractors to be involved in this project,” he said during the Gurney Wharf ground breaking ceremony on Saturday (May 14).

Chow said five tenders had been opened and the Johor based company had been offered as the main contractor that would be responsible for executing the main building works for the project.

He said the other four sub-contractors (nominated) would be announced from time to time.

The project cost was initially estimated at RM176mil but has now grown to RM200mil and was expected to be completed by as early as 2025.

In 2016, it was reported that the coastline along Gurney Drive would get a makeover with a massive recreational waterfront project.

About 50 acres (20ha) of the 131 acres (53ha) reclaimed area would be turned into a public park complete with public facilities and amenities for the disabled.

The Gurney Wharf project is touted as the state’s seafront park-in-the-city project.

The entire reclamation project which spanned 53ha was completed in September 2019 but the project took a break due to travel restrictions and for the land to settle.

The project will deliver significant new opportunities for Penangites via publicly accessible waterfront promenades plus retail, education, lifestyle and transport amenities.
