JB cops seize fireworks worth RM83,000

BATU PAHAT: Some RM83,000 worth of fireworks have been seized by the police here.

Marine Police Region 2 commander Asst Comm Muhd Zailani Abdullah said that the items were seized at about 6.30pm on Wednesday (April 13) during Ops Kontraban.

“Following a tip-off from the other public, we were able to raid the store where the fireworks were kept.

“We found 63 boxes of various fireworks estimated to be worth about RM83,000. The fireworks are believed to be for the local market for Hari Raya,” he said in a statement here on Friday (April 15).

He added that a 49-year-old man who was hiding the fireworks was arrested.

The case is being investigated under the Explosive Substance Act 1957 where if found guilty, a maximum of seven years’ jail, a maximum fine of RM10,000 or both can be imposed.

ACP Muhd Zailani added that the marine police are conducting operations regularly to curb illegal activities.

He also urged the public to inform the authorities if they come across any illegal activities to assist them in protecting public safety.
