HR and Home Ministries to meet with stakeholders on labour shortage issue, says Dr Wee

MELAKA: Companies in many sectors are currently struggling with a labour shortage stemming from the delay in bringing foreign workers to Malaysia, says Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong.

The Transport Minister said this was based on a discussion he had with Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Economy) Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed and Melaka unity, community relationship, human resource and consumer’s affair committee chairman Ngwe Hee Sem.

“This was based on input we shared where we discussed several issues related to the country’s economy,” he said in a post on his Facebook page on Saturday (June 25).

Dr Wee also shared that he attended the opening ceremony of the 76th Associated Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia (ACCCIM) Annual General Meeting earlier today.

“They (ACCCIM) have suggested that the Federal Government extend valid work permits for foreign workers so that their companies can retain their workforce and save costs at the same time.

“Mustapa said that the government shares their (ACCCIM) concerns in this matter and will arrange a meeting with ACCCIM and the ministers for Human Resources and Home Affairs to discuss the best way forward when dealing with this issue,” he added.

On Friday (June 24), Dr Wee attended the ACCCIM dinner where he praised them for playing a role in reviving the economic sector in Malaysia during difficult times caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.
