Stop dredging up old stories to incite unrest, cops warn

IPOH: Police have warned the public to stop recycling old news that could cause unrest.

Ipoh OCPD Asst Comm Yahaya Hassan said that on Tuesday (Dec 27), police came across an old issue being shared on Facebook and catching the attention of many.

ACP Yahaya said the matter involved a racially sensitive remark by an individual that was causing uneasiness among the people.

“A check found that a report was lodged on Aug 12, 2019, on this issue.

“The case was investigated under Section 504 of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act,” he said in a statement.

“The individual responsible was charged under Section 182 of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Act, fined a total of RM6,000 and served three days in jail (after being sentenced) by the Ipoh Magistrate’s and Sessions Courts,” he added.

ACP Yahaya said the people should not spread recycled news that can cause uneasiness.

“Action will be taken against any irresponsible people who misuse social media to spread sensitive issues that could result in unrest,” he added.
