Police sergeant claims trial to accepting RM2,000 bribe

SEREMBAN: A 36-year-old police sergeant claimed trial at the Sessions Court here to a charge of accepting RM2,000 from two suspects involved in a case he was investigating.

Norhazarel Anuar Hamidon pleaded not guilty after the charge was read to him before judge Norshila Kamaruddin on Friday (Dec 16).

The accused allegedly committed the offence near the Magistrate’s Court in the Taman Tasek Bahau area at around 10.30am on Aug 5, 2020.

He allegedly accepted the money from one Muhammad Hadif Abdullah although he knew that the latter and a friend were two suspects in a case he was investigating.

Norhazarel was charged under Section 165 of the Penal Code which carries a jail term of up to two years or a fine or both upon conviction.

The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission’s Mohamad Firdaus Mohamad Ali then offered a RM5,000 bail pending next mention of the case.

He also asked the court to order the accused to report at the MACC office here once a month until the hearing is completed.

Asked if there was anyone present in court to post bail, Norhazarel said his wife would do so.

The judge then asked the accused’s wife how much she could come up with and was told that she had RM3,000.

Mohamad Firdaus then told the court that he would leave the sum to the court’s discretion.

Norshila then said RM5,000 with one surety was a reasonable amount and fixed Jan 18 for case management.

The accused, who was unrepresented, posted bail.
