Motorist nabbed over hit-and-run that left two children badly hurt

KLUANG: A 29-year-old man has been arrested to help with the investigation of a hit-and-run case at KM57 Jalan Batu Pahat-Mersing here which seriously injured a child and an infant, among others.

Kluang OCPD Asst Comm Bahrin Mohd Noh said the incident occurred at 7pm on Saturday (Jan 28) involving a sedan and a pickup truck.

“Both vehicles were heading towards Mersing from Kluang, and the pickup suddenly rammed into the back of the sedan, causing it to crash into a tree on the left side of the road.

“The sedan was driven by a 34-year-old man who suffered head and rib injuries and is currently being treated at Hospital Kluang,” he said in a statement on Sunday (Jan 29).

“There were three passengers in the sedan: a 37-year-old woman, a six-year-old girl, and a one-year-old girl.

“The woman suffered broken ribs and a broken right arm.

“The girl and infant suffered serious head injuries,” he added.

The suspect, who is believed to have been drunk at the time, was arrested and had a blood sample drawn for analysis by the Chemistry Department, he said.

A urine test returned negative for drugs and the suspect had no criminal record, ACP Bahrin added.

The case is being investigated under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless driving.

Earlier, a 25sec video was posted on social media showing a pickup driving away after crashing into the back of a car.

As of 10.30am on Sunday, the video had been viewed more than 200,000 times.
