Nintendo Files New Controller Patent; Looks Like An N64 Controller

Nintendo controller patent

Aside from the Nintendo Switch Joy-Cons and its Pro Controllers, the company probably doesn’t need any new controllers. But that didn’t stop the company from filing patents for new ones. And the company did just that in July last year, with it being granted earlier this year.

Twitter user @SillyTweet5 was the first to discover it, and one can understand the excitement that comes with the tweet. But at a glance, it’s difficult to imagine this being a general use controller since it decidedly lacks any form of analogue sticks. Though it does look like an N64 controller without the pointy bits at the bottom.

Unfortunately, the patent itself doesn’t describe anything new or exciting that’s immediately beneficial to anyone holding the controller. But considering the way it looks, one would speculate that this is one step into putting a limited run of an N64 Classic into the market. Nintendo has already done this for the NES Classic and SNES Classic, after all.

All that being said, the purpose of this controller patent remains a mystery. Though if an N64 Classic does show up in a couple of years’ time, we can’t really say we’re surprised with these hints already pointing in that direction.
