Asdevices become increasingly miniaturized and highly integrated, changes in 3D processing precision of circuit patternsand localized material properties in the manufacturing process have come to have a greater impact on device performance than ever before. For this reason, multi-point and varied inspections and measurements are becoming essential, and the need for improved inspection throughput is expected to continue to increase going forward.Hitachi High-Tech has been conducting joint research with UTokyo since 2020, which developed the high-resolutionLaser-PEEM technology, with the aim of resolving further issues facing customers by leveraging Hitachi High-Tech's expertise in supporting semiconductor manufacturing through high reproducibility and throughput.Details of This Research's Trials Using the Features of High-resolution Laser-PEEM1. Quick nano-scale observationLaser-PEEM irradiates the entire observation target with a laser instead of an electron beam, and obtains the observedimage by capturing the electrons emitted from the observation target with a camera. This research has verified that, using this method, it is possible to obtain a wider area of high-resolution data at once, thereby contributing tosubstantially shortening the inspection process compared to a SEM, which scans using an electron beam.2. Enables the observation of various chemical information of materialsThe semiconductor manufacturing process consists of three main processes: resist coating, exposure, and development. In order to inspect the shape of circuit patterns, we currently inspect the uneven patterns formed on thewafer surface after development. It is believed that yield could be improved if it were possible to inspect what are called latent image patterns, which are formed immediately after exposure and are chemically etched with no irregularities on the actual surface. In this research, we applied Laser-PEEM to latent image pattern observation anddemonstrated that it was possible to observe them at high resolution and with high throughput. This functionality is a technique that was not possible with SEMs, and we anticipate this could lead to the creation of new inspection markets going forward.3. Enables non-destructive observation of nanostructuresLaser-PEEM is capable of sensing at depths of approximately 10 to 100 nanometers, and we have demonstrated that it is able to "look through" and see whether defects are present in wafers and what caused them in a non-destructive manner. This makes it possible for the previous work of processing wafers to analyze the cause of faults to now be carried out non- destructively. We also expect to see more advances in moving to three-dimensions going forward,thereby contributing to reducing the workload involved in processing, as well as more accurate analysis.Future OutlookBy providing inspection and measurement equipment using electron beam technology and optical technology, Hitachi High-Tech continues to respond to our customers' various processing, measurement and inspection needs in the development and mass production of semiconductor devices. This area has now been designated as Okinawa Prefecture's first Nationally Certified Sustainably Managed Natural Site (1), awarded by Japan's Ministry of the Environment.Project siteThe following characteristics of the project were key to the designation:1. Nosokozaki is the only area in Ishigaki Island where umishobu seagrass grows, making it a habitat for rare species. Until around 2010, before damage caused by sea turtles became serious, the area also supported a total of ten species of seagrass, providing water purification and blue carbon storage functions. If successful, these conservation efforts are expected to lead to the recovery of a comparable number of biomass and species.2. The project includes biodiversity conservation activities with Nosoko Elementary School students. This fosters biodiversity education, cultivates a culture of environmental stewardship, and strengthens the connection of future generations with nature.3. Umishobu seagrass stores carbon, contributing to decarbonization efforts. Seoul, Korea – November 07, 2024 – (SeaPRwire) – Seoul Metropolitan Government and Seoul Design Foundation of the Republic of Korea provide stage-by-stage support to strengthen the competitiveness of the design industry, from recruiting emerging designers to nurturing their growth into world-class designers or successful companies. The SME Design Development Support Program represents the final stage of this initiative, assisting competent design-specialized companies to collaborate with SMEs possessing cutting-edge future growth technologies in developing products and services. Entering its second year, the project began accepting applications in February 2024. SMEs with design needs and design-specialized companies formed consortia to apply. A total of 38 consortia (comprising 76 companies) were selected for support. Over a project period of approximately four months, each consortium successfully completed its design outcomes.” Each of the selected 38 consortia received design development funding ranging from KRW 20 million to KRW 30 million. Comprehensive training in material design management and other advanced education commenced in May. Following one-on-one preliminary assessments, development tasks were specified, and high-quality products and services were developed through coordinating and mentoring across specialized fields. This support enabled the companies to achieve tangible results in the market. Furthermore, the completed product services were showcased at the “2024 DDP Design Launch Fair,” a premier Seoul design industry launch platform held at DDP from October 17 to 27. This initiative aimed to create business opportunities, attracting approximately 87,000 visitors over the 10-day exhibition period. European and Asian buyers from entities such as The Conran Shop (UK), Coming Soon (USA), and MoMA (Hong Kong), along with Korean distribution buyers from Lotte Home Shopping, Coupang, Kurly, and Wadiz, visited to engage in business consultations with participating companies. Additionally, investment firms in Korea, including Central Investment Partners and Daesung Startup Investment, were invited to attend investment attraction presentations, receiving significant positive responses. Among the 38 consortia, four outstanding consortia leading future growth areas were selected based on expert evaluations of feasibility according to design development goals, excellence and differentiation of design, and the applicability and expected effects of the outcomes. These consortia were awarded an additional KRW 10 million in prizes. AscenKorea Inc. (SME) and Design Plus Story (Design Company) collaborated to design a portable, ultra-compact, lightweight, high-precision satellite navigation device. Based on this design, AscenKorea revealed the potential to enter the global satellite navigation equipment market. Project Noah Inc. (SME) and ohSeven Co., Ltd. (Design Company) redesigned existing bamboo toothbrushes and solid toothpaste packages, which previously struggled to communicate product excellence beyond eco-friendliness. Utilizing the imagery of Noah’s Ark as a “safe haven amidst a flood of harmful substances,” they effectively conveyed the safety of Dr. Noah’s products to customers. Lablup Inc. (SME) and Vice Versa Design Studio (Design Company) significantly enhanced the usability of the existing web and app interfaces of Backend.AI, an AI model development and deployment resource management platform.
