Pontian sporting goods shop gutted in fire

PONTIAN: A double-storey sporting goods shop on Jalan Delima 8 at the Pontian Commercial Centre near here was gutted in a fire on Tuesday (Feb 22).

Pontian Fire and Rescue Department chief Azhar Abd Jalil said the department received an emergency call regarding the fire at 12.22am.

He said one Fire Rescue Tender (FRT) vehicle, one Light Fire Rapid Transit (LFRT) vehicle and an Emergency Medical Response Services (EMRS) vehicle were used in the operations.

“Twelve firefighters were deployed to the scene,’’ Azhar said in a statement, adding that the fire was extinguished at 1.45am.

Azhar said the fire damaged 50 per cent of the ground floor of the double-storey building.

The cause and losses suffered are still under investigation, he added.
